For the first time, a woman was elected president of Mexico. Left-wing candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum won with nearly 60% of the votes on Sunday June 2.
At 61, Claudia Sheinbaum, candidate of the left, is the first woman to take the helm of Mexico. “For the first time in 200 years of the Republic, I will become the first female president of Mexico,” said Claudia Sheinbaum. Scientist, holder of a doctorate, Claudia Sheinbaum has chosen to hang up her blouse to get involved alongside the president. She quickly rose through the ranks and took over as mayor of Mexico City in 2018. In her program, she promised to defend the poor and expand the right to health, education and housing. In a country plagued by violence and drug cartels, the biggest challenge for the new president will be to restore security.
