[Classique] “Don Quixote at the Duchess”, Hervé Niquet

Hervé Niquet has just captivated the Quebec public with a high-flying Charpentier concert. It returns here, in a new jewel in the collection of the Palace of Versailles, to Don Quixote at the Duchess de Boismortier, a comic ballet he had recorded in 1996 for Naxos, then for Alpha on DVD in 2016. The work is an excellent example of the work of the baroque interpreter, whose range of action surpasses that of the traditional conductor since , compared to the sources transmitted, it is often necessary to reconstitute the sound frame, the orchestration. This new recording benefits from the additional 25 years of experience and familiarity of the conductor and his musicians with French idioms. Niquet animates with dynamism and joviality a sparkling and earthy work, of which he is right to underline the kinship with platy, which this “modern and wacky” ballet precedes by two years. With a distribution carried by Mathias Vidal, Jean-Gabriel Saint-Martin and Chantal Santon-Jeffery, here is a necessary detour for fans of Rameau and platy.
