Classes are canceled at Cégep de Valleyfield due to police intervention; an individual was reportedly injured there

Police officers from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) were called to intervene Friday morning at the Valleyfield CEGEP, in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, in Montérégie, due to an individual who allegedly injured an employee of the establishment.

The victim was transported to a hospital center, and there is no fear for his life, according to the SQ. According to initial information, the injuries were inflicted by a stab.

As for the suspect, the police arrested him and he was transported to hospital “to receive treatment appropriate to his condition,” the police force said in an email. He will be questioned when possible.

The SQ reported that police officers from the Beauharnois-Salaberry MRC were contacted shortly after 6 a.m. to intervene at the CEGEP located on Champlain Street in connection with an individual who allegedly injured an employee.

Police set up a perimeter, which was cordoned off, and officers later located the suspect.

An investigation was opened in order to better understand the causes and circumstances of the event.

The Valleyfield CEGEP published a short message early in the morning on its social networks to indicate that the campus was inaccessible “due to a police intervention in progress since early this morning.”

Classes and activities at the CEGEP have been suspended for the day and the library remains closed for the moment, it was specified.
