The opening of the sixtieth edition of the Agricultural Show on Saturday February 24 is part of history. For the first time, a President of the Republic was unable to walk following the outbreak of demonstrators. Emmanuel Macron therefore improvised a debate.
Hundreds of angry farmers forced the passage of the Agricultural Show before its opening on the morning of Saturday February 24. Overwhelmed, the police had to face a horde of protesters chanting “Macron resignation”. Clashes took place with the CRS while the president met with agricultural unions. At 10:30 a.m., the show was finally able to open its doors to the public, except in the main hall.
An impromptu debate
Against all expectations, Emmanuel Macron, after having canceled it the day before, finally improvised a debate with farmers. In shirt sleeves, the president first calls for calm and says he prefers “dialogue to confrontation”. The exchange between the president and the farmers, dissatisfied with the government’s responses, was tense for two hours. Emmanuel Macron is expected to continue his visit this afternoon.
