“Clara, Robert and Johannes,” Alexander Shelley and the NAC Orchestra

After one 3e Symphony of exceptional Schumann, the final volume of this complete symphony of Schumann and Brahms shines with a concise and intractable version of the Fourth by Brahms, to which The duty had attended in February since she was associated with the creation of Songs for Murdered Sisters by Jake Heggie. This Fourth struck in particular by the steamroller of the third shutter and the relentless breath of the finale. This great art of unitary breathing also marks the Fourth by Schumann, where the indications “ Ziemlich langsam » (movements I and II) are taken in the sense of “moderately” slow, with an almost impatient pulsation. If the transition III-IV is admirable, we hoped for even more exalted final moments. The transition to chamber music is still disconcerting. Beautiful Hewitt-Kawasaki duo in 3 romances by Clara Schumann who, at the end of the second disc, offers surprising homages to Bach played by Stewart Goodyear, who devotes himselfultimately to improvisations exposing the anachronisms of these multi-genre projects.
