Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed, on Sunday 1st, the first evacuation of around a hundred civilians from the underground passages of the Azovstal factory, the last stronghold of the Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol.
On images provided by the Azov battalion, Sunday, May 1, we see silhouettes: families with children, and pets. At least 80 civilians left the hell of the Azovstal factory in Mariupol. They had been holed up for several weeks in the undergrounds of the industrial complex, the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance.
In buses chartered by Russia, and under UN and Red Cross escort, they were first taken to areas held by Russian separatists. According to Russia, they must receive first aid in this camp, and food aid. Among civilians, no one dared to believe in the evacuation, repeatedly postponed. “We tried to leave by bus two or three times already, but there was intense shelling. They sent us back to the factory, and wouldn’t let us go”, explains a woman. According to the Ukrainian president, the civilians should be taken on Monday, May 2 to Zaporijia, where the refugees from Mariupol are being received.
