Since the start of the Russian offensive on Thursday February 24, residents have fled the city and many others have taken refuge in the metro to protect themselves from the bombardments.
“I prepared my backpack, my charger if I arrive to load my phone, I took water, pasta, fruit and that’s it, if ever the embassy says they will evacuate us”reports a French national. Confined to his apartment on Friday February 25, he finds himself stranded in Ukraine, facing war. To escape the Russian strikes, other civilians took refuge in the metro. On the faces are present fatigue and anxiety.
Families, children, are installed on mattresses or on the floor. “I’m here because I think it’s one of the only places right now where you can hide in Kyiv”explains a Ukrainian. “I feel anxious, it’s so unusual. None of this seems real”says another. In another shelter, the population sings to reassure themselves. Some preferred to flee, creating huge traffic jams. Gas stations are stormed and gasoline is rationed.
