In Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), six months after the birth of her son, Kristina Desgrés only has a simple birth certificate as a document. The first name “Hadès” that she wanted to give to her son was refused by the civil status officer and the public prosecutor of Saint-Malo. A decision contested by the parents. “I will fight at all costs for my son to keep his first name, because we chose him. (…) I think we are still free to call our children what we want”believes Kristina Desgrés.
Brother of Zeus and Poseidon, Hades designates in Greek mythology the king of the dead. Its role is to prevent them from leaving the underworld so as not to frighten men and gods. A connotation considered pejorative by the services of theState. In the absence of case law, counsel for the parents relied on other examples. In France, the first name Hades was given to 12 boys last year, without any opposition from justice. Pending the deliberation scheduled for April 4, Hades keeps his first name. In case of failure, the parents are already planning to appeal this decision.
