About sixty bodies have been discovered under the rubble of buildings in Shujaiya, a neighborhood in Gaza City, the Gaza Strip Civil Defense said Thursday, July 11. On Wednesday evening, the Israeli army announced that it had “finished” its offensive in Choujaïya, the scene of violent fighting since June 27, which had forced tens of thousands of people to flee. This operation allowed, according to it, to dismantle eight tunnels and kill “dozens of terrorists”.
“When the Israeli occupation forces withdrew from the Shujaiya neighborhood, the Civil Defense teams, with the help of the residents, managed to find about sixty martyrs at that stage”said Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal in a statement.
These people were exhumed from the rubble in this eastern district of Gaza City, which has become a “disaster zone”, according to him. Now, “85% of buildings [du quartier] are uninhabitable”, said Mahmoud Basal, not counting all the infrastructure that has been “demolished”. The few buildings still standing are gutted and without facades, the others reduced to mounds of stones, twisted metal and pulverized concrete where one can no longer distinguish the signs of recent life.
