No golfer was able to do better than Dustin Johnson on the first day of competition at the LIV Tour in Chicago on Friday, the American continuing his momentum by delivering an excellent card of 63 (-9).
The 38-year-old, winner in Boston two weeks ago – the first American to win a LIV tournament – has outgrown all of his competitors on the greens at Rich Harvest Farms. Johnson made no mistakes during his round, including birding six of his front nine.
It is especially with a lead of three strokes over his nearest pursuer, the Australian Cameron Smith, that the leader will attack the day on Saturday. The latter also committed no bogey. The American Matthew Wolff (67; -5) completes the podium, he who among other things wedged an eagle.
It is also Johnson’s 4 Aces GC who dominate the team standings, at -12. He and Talor Gooch (69) made up for tough rounds from teammates Patrick Reed (74) and Pat Perez (76).
Smith’s Punch GC follows at -10, with the team counting on golfers Matt Jones (68), Marc Leishman (71) and Wade Ormsby (72).
David Puig, a promising university hopeful from Spain, was making his debut on the circuit. He is positioned at the 34th level by virtue of a round of 73 (+1).
-The second and third rounds of the Chicago tournament will be broadcast on TVA Sports 2.
