Cinema: Quebec director Charlotte Le Bon nominated for a César

A film by Quebec director Charlotte Le Bon is nominated in the César category for best first film for the 48e Cesar ceremony which will take place on February 24 on the stage of the Olympia, in Paris.

The director’s film, titled Falcon Lake, stars Joseph Engel, Sara Montpetit, Monia Chokri and Arthur Igual. It depicts two young people vacationing in a cabin by a lake in Quebec, which is haunted by a ghost legend. Despite the age difference between them, the film shows that the two teenagers form a singular bond to face their fears.

Four other films are nominated in the category of best first film: Bruno Reidal, confession of a murderer, The worst, Saint-Omer and The sixth child.

Charlotte Le Bon is already known for previous César nominations. Her role as Claire in Nabil Ben Yadir’s March earned her a César nomination for female revelation in 2013. And her performance as Victoire Doutreleau in the Yves Saint Laurent by Jalil Lespert, in 2015, earned her a second César nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

The Innocent and The Night of 12 lead the way

The detective comedy The Innocent by Louis Garrel and the thriller The Night of 12 by Dominik Moll, retracing the impossible investigation into a feminicide, are at the top of the nominations for the 48th César.

With 11 and 10 nominations respectively, these two feature films are in the lead, ahead of the film In Body by Cédric Klapisch on the reconstruction of a classical dancer, and Peace, with Benoît Magimel, nine nominations each.

Fanny Ardant (The Young Lovers), Juliette Binoche (Ouistreham), Laure Calamy (Full time), Virginie Efira (See Paris again) and Adele Exarchopoulos (I don’t give a fuck) are in the running for the César for best actress.

Are nominated for the César for best actor Jean Dujardin (November), Louis Garrel (The Innocent), Vincent Macaigne (Chronicle of a temporary liaison), Denis Menochet (peter von kant) and Benoît Magimel (pacification).

The 4,705 members of the Academy now have a month to decide between these films, before the awards evening which will be chaired by Tahar Rahim, and presented collectively with nine masters and mistresses of ceremonies, from Emmanuelle Devos to Eye Haïdara, in via Alex Lutz and Ahmed Sylla.
