Cindy Woodhouse becomes Chief of the Assembly of First Nations

Cindy Woodhouse becomes chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

After six rounds of voting, the regional leader of the AFN for Manitoba had received 50.8% of the votes recorded, ahead of her closest rival, David Pratt, who finally withdrew from the race Thursday morning.

The election comes months after former national leader RoseAnne Archibald was ousted from her post following the findings of an investigation into complaints about her conduct.

The independent review concluded that some of her behaviors constituted harassment, that she violated confidentiality rules and violated internal policies by retaliating against the complainants. Mme Archibald has denied the allegations. Those who support her say she was removed from her position for trying to change the status quo of the organization.

Of the 231 chiefs who participated in the special assembly, 71% voted in favor of his dismissal.

More details will follow.
