Billions of cicadas will descend on the forests and suburban suburbs of the central United States. This phenomenon has not happened since 1803.
They have impressive red eyes, and their deafening song is reminiscent of the sound of an alarm. Cicadas have started emerging from the ground in recent weeks in the United States, and they are not going unnoticed. “During the day it sounds like an engine noise, but at night it feels like a jungle”, testifies a resident. These insects are different from those that we encounter every summer in the south of France. They only emerge from the ground every 13 to 17 years.
Insects to taste
For the first time since 1803, two different species will be born in the same year. Billions of specimens will emerge in the space of a few weeks. A few years ago, some people had filled buckets with these animals proliferating in their gardens. These cicadas are harmless and do not damage vegetation because they do not feed. Some restaurants will even offer these protein-rich and crunchy insects for tasting.
