In Guadeloupe, the hospital is forced to limit its activity to emergencies, for lack of nursing staff. A vast recruitment campaign has been launched.

Saturday, May 28, the corridors of the emergency reception of the CHU of Guadeloupe are cluttered with stretchers, and all the boxes are occupied. Caregivers, overwhelmed, chain the weeks of work. “We do three out of four weekends in our month”indicates Dr. Camille Bruneel, emergency doctor, who also points out “lots of departures”.

According to the management, six doctors left the establishment in just one month. Patients treated late sometimes see their pathology worsen. For union representatives, the problem is mainly due to the layoff, for seven months, of staff refusing the vaccine against Covid-19. “It was to be expected, when you put 400 people in difficulty because they did not take a vaccine”, comments Gaby Clavier, UTS-UGTG General Secretary. A recruiting campaign has been launched on the island.
