The Minister of Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu, announced in an interview with “Parisien”, Sunday February 11, that a new calculation method benefiting small areas will be implemented in the energy performance diagnosis (DPE).

A new calculation method benefiting small areas will be introduced in the energy performance diagnosis (DPE). In an interview given to ParisianSunday February 11, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu, recognized a bias in the current DPE formula. “The smaller the surface area of a home, the more the share of domestic hot water weighs on its classification, without any real link with the number of occupants”, he indicated. More precisely, according to the minister, 27% of homes of less than 40 square meters are considered energy sieves, without this reflecting reality.

Give flexibility to owners

This new adjustment to the DPE would above all be a way of giving flexibility to owners who wish to rent poorly insulated accommodation, according to a specialist in energy efficiency. Energy sieves classified “G” will be prohibited for rental from 2025. Those labeled “F” will be prohibited from 2028. With the adjustment announced by Christophe Béchu, 140,000 housing units of less than 40 square meters would fall out of these categories.
