Christmas markets to light up our holidays

This text is part of the special book Plaisirs

They have grown all over Quebec over the past decade. Here are a few to get you in the holiday spirit this weekend.

In Montreal and its surroundings

After a break of a few years, Le Grand Marché de Noël lights up the Place des Festivals, in the Quartier des Spectacles, until December 31. More than 60 Quebec artisans take part in the celebration. About thirty chalets are scattered on the site and more than 150 free events are on the program.

At the Atwater market, Le Village de Noël offers free programming for families until December 18. This is the place to find ethical and eco-responsible products from more than 50 artisans.

On the side of the Jean-Talon market, the third edition of the Christmas Market promises all kinds of tastings, but also the visit of a real “boulegalow”, which is none other than the house of the elves.

The perfect place to find personalized gifts, the 66e Quebec Crafts Fair will take place from December 8 to 18, 2022 at the Olympic Stadium. Entrance fee: $10.

South of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, the Longueuil Christmas and Traditions Market transforms St. Mark Park into a small village until December 18. Every weekend from Friday, 4 p.m., just follow the smells to discover donuts and other delicacies served in the wooden houses. A host of craftsmen are also on site. Not to mention Santa Claus!

On the North Shore, the Laval Christmas Market will take place from December 2 to 4 and from December 9 to 11 at the Center de la nature. About sixty participants will present their creations and gourmet products.

In Quebec

This year, the German Christmas Market is leaving the Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville for the Terrasse Dufferin, a stone’s throw from the Château Frontenac. Artisans also await visitors in wooden kiosks deployed in four other sites: the traditional spaces of the gardens of the Hôtel-de-Ville and rue Sainte-Anne, as well as Place d’Armes and Place d’Youville. Between giant pretzels, mulled wine and other European traditions, local products slip in. Many free activities are offered. New features include the Château du Père Noël erected on Place d’Armes and presented by Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, and an ambulatory show of giant puppets that will take the streets of the city by storm twice. Note that while the market festivities will end on December 23, the five sites will be animated by Kaleidoscopes between Christmas and New Year’s Day. We are promised a “festive, cultural and multidisciplinary celebration”!

In the heart of the city, the Grand Marché de Noël offers a completely different indoor experience. Until December 31, exhibitors take turns in the building on boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel. On December 9, 10 and 11, local wines and spirits will be given pride of place.

In the Eastern Townships

There are so many Christmas markets in the region that it is difficult to keep count. There are no less than seven in the Brome-Missisquoi sector alone!

On November 26-27 and December 3-4, the one in Sutton will bring together some fifty artisans. Every weekend until December 18, the Sherbrooke Station Market Christmas Market also takes on the colors of the holidays. Various creators will be there, as well as Father and Mother Christmas.

In Granby, the Salon des artisans will be held on November 25, 26 and 27. You can unearth knitwear, decorative objects, jewellery, gourmet products, etc.

On the Orford side, the Falalala Market invites visitors to meet artisans on November 26 and 27. A concert by Gregory Charles, accompanied by his daughter Julia, will also be presented in the evening ($50).

In the Laurentians

For 13 years, the Val-David Christmas Market has prided itself on offering an incomparable selection of hundreds of high-quality festive products. At the Place des Citoyens de Sainte-Adèle, around fifty exhibitors will be offering craftsmen’s creations and agri-food products on December 3 and 4.

In the Lower Laurentians, Oka Abbey is the setting for the Christmas market on November 18, 19 and 20. The second edition of Vieux-Saint-Eustache will be held on December 2, 3, 4 and 9, 10, 11 in the gardens of the Globensky manor. More than 35 exhibitors will notably offer tastings. Songs and stories will be included in the program.
