According to a survey carried out by the League Against Cancer, 70% of French people see no problem in letting their teenagers consume a glass of alcohol during holiday meals. However, the first glass of alcohol can lead to more regular consumption with very dangerous effects.

The end of year celebrations are often the occasion for the very first glass of alcohol for adolescents, with the blessing of their parents. According to a survey carried out by the League against Cancer, 70% of French people do not see a problem. In France, we had to wait until 1956 and the ban on wine in canteens to see the first prevention campaigns on the harm of alcohol. At the time, they were intended for under 14s.

“The risk of alcohol is first on the brain”

The danger of the first drink of alcohol is that it normalizes its consumption among young people, and can lead to more regular consumption with devastating effects. “The risk of alcohol is first on the brain. We know that the brain will be disinhibited, that is to say that the child or young adolescent risks taking disproportionate risks for their health. And then on the other hand, we also know that it disrupts the growth of neurons“, explain the doctor and journalist from France Télévisions Damien Mascret.

According to the French Drug Observatory, at 17, one in three young people say they have been drunk at least once in the last month.
