There are crowds for Chinese New Year. Because of Covid, many Chinese have not been able to return to see their families in recent years. So they take advantage of it.

Airport, ports, toll booths… all packed to capacity, like a Shanghai train station. These Chinese people are returning to their families for the Lunar New Year holiday. Some had been deprived of it in previous years because of Covid. “It’s been two years since I’ve been back”, confides a man. A father takes his children to Shandong, five hours from Shanghai. “There’s snow there, I want to see it quickly before it melts”specifies one of his sons. “I can’t wait to see my loved ones, especially the older ones”says his father.

500 million train tickets sold

Nearly 500 million train tickets have been sold. In the station, there are departures every two minutes. Once on board, the vacation can finally begin. “The atmosphere on the train is very cheerful, now everyone has finally finished this busy year. We can go home and spend a few quiet and happy days”, relates a passenger. In 2024, the Lunar New Year begins on February 10. The Chinese will then enter the year of the dragon.
