Chinese Electric Car Offers 950 km Range at a Lower Price Than Model Y: A Potential Game Changer

Chinese automotive brand Leapmotor is making its way into the European market, particularly France, with the introduction of the C10 REEV, a family-oriented electric SUV. This model features a range extender, enabling it to cover up to 950 kilometers on a single charge. Priced competitively at €37,400, it aims to compete with established models like the Tesla Model Y. The C10 REEV boasts a spacious interior and advanced technology, making it an appealing alternative for eco-conscious consumers.

Leapmotor’s Entry into the European Market

Chinese automotive brands are making significant strides in Europe, much to the chagrin of Brussels. Despite various efforts to limit their impact, these manufacturers are steadily infiltrating the market, achieving varying levels of success—MG being a notable exception. One of the emerging names in this landscape is Leapmotor, a brand you may not yet be familiar with.

Introducing the Leapmotor C10 REEV

Founded in 2015, Leapmotor has gradually made its presence felt in France through the importer SN Diffusion. In a strategic move, Stellantis has invested in this promising manufacturer, taking charge of its distribution in the region. Alongside the compact T03, Leapmotor has recently introduced its second electric vehicle, the C10.

This family-oriented electric SUV is designed to compete with models like the Tesla Model Y and Renault Scénic E-Tech. Recently unveiled in a new variant, the C10 REEV (Range Extender Electric Vehicle) features an innovative range extender that allows it to travel an impressive 950 kilometers on a single charge. The public had its first look at this model during the Brussels Motor Show.

Stellantis has announced that the starting price for the C10 REEV in France is set at €37,400, while its fully electric counterpart begins at €36,400. Pre-orders will be available starting January 20, with the first deliveries expected in April. Given its competitive price and performance, this model could attract buyers looking for alternatives to the latest Tesla Model Y, which starts at €44,990 in France.

It’s important to note that the Model Y is eligible for an ecological bonus ranging from €2,000 to €4,000, depending on the buyer’s income, making its effective price between €40,990 and €42,990. Conversely, the Leapmotor C10 REEV does not qualify for such incentives due to its Chinese manufacturing origins.

Performance and Features of the C10 REEV

Powered by a 215-horsepower electric motor and a compact 28.4 kWh battery, the C10 REEV offers a limited electric-only range of 145 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. So how does it achieve that remarkable 950-kilometer range? This is made possible with the inclusion of a 1.5L gasoline engine that acts solely as a generator to recharge the battery, without connecting to the wheels.

Leapmotor claims that this innovative system results in CO2 emissions of less than 10 g/km, allowing it to avoid ecological penalties. Charging can be done via a CSS socket with a maximum capacity of 65 kW, and the automaker states that users can regain “half of their electric range in just 18 minutes.” This makes refueling at gas stations both quick and efficient.

In terms of design, the C10 maintains its dimensions at 4.74 meters, regardless of the variant. Inside, drivers will find a spacious 14.6-inch touchscreen alongside a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Notable features also include an integrated route planner, which enhances the driving experience and was tested in our comprehensive review.
