(OTTAWA) After struggling to return a controversial $140,000 donation linked to Beijing, in a move that led to mass resignations, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation has finally refunded the amount to the sender.
The check was cashed “in full” by the Millennium Golden Eagle company, which is owned by the Chinese billionaire close to the Chinese regime behind the donation, Zhang Bin, was able to confirm The Press from a source familiar with the matter on Friday.
The chairman of the Foundation’s board of directors, Edward Johnson, also asked the Auditor General of Canada, Karen Horgan, on Friday to carry out an audit of its management of donations, promising her “full cooperation” if she decided to accede to this request.
The independent investigation commissioned Wednesday by the organization, which was criticized by two resigners from the Trudeau Foundation, will be carried out in parallel, says one in the letter which was received at the office of the auditor general.
