Last month, the Americans shot down Chinese balloons that might spy on them. This time, it is Chinese cranes transporting the goods to ports in the United States that arouse suspicion.

What if giant cranes were the new Chinese spy tool? This is the threat that the Pentagon has just discovered. In many American ports, the cranes, which are used to load and unload ships, are made by a Chinese company: ZPMC. Inside, ultra-sophisticated sensors make it possible to precisely monitor and track each container.

Charges denied by China

But the containers also often contain US military equipment. The Chinese could therefore spy on and track every arms delivery. China could also take control of the cranes remotely, which the company implied in a promotional video made in 2017. A problem for national security according to the American government and according to cyber-security experts. The Chinese Foreign Ministry denies these accusations.
