A Unique Santa Claus Experience in Chengdu

In a surprising twist, Santa Claus has chosen Chengdu, a bustling city in central-western China with a population exceeding 21 million, as his base of operations instead of the traditional North Pole. Here, a Frenchman named Alain Simonin has captured the hearts of many, becoming a local sensation as the most beloved Santa Claus in the region. With his signature white beard and festive attire, Alain transforms into the jolly figure we all know, engaging with children and families throughout the holiday season.

Alain Simonin: The Star of Christmas in Chengdu

Alain, originally from the Vosges region, immerses himself in the holiday spirit for a full month each December, participating in various festive events. His presence draws large crowds as children flock to meet him, capturing countless photos together. As he humorously shares through his microphone, “Don’t be jealous, I always think of France,” reminding everyone of his roots even while he spreads joy in China.

Each year, Alain is recruited by John Lim, the owner of a prominent hotel, to embody Santa Claus. His popularity has grown immensely over the past decade, with many children in Chengdu eagerly anticipating his arrival. James, a French resident, expresses his admiration, stating, “I find it magnificent. So, Léonard comes to see Santa Claus every year.”

This December, Alain’s Santa Claus headquarters is located in one of Asia’s largest shopping malls. Here, he enjoys the luxury of a 4-star hotel suite, complete with a personal hairdresser to ensure he looks his best. This pampering is a far cry from his everyday life in the Vosges, allowing him to fully embrace his role as Santa.

When not entertaining in the mall, Alain explores the historic center of Chengdu, always accompanied by an interpreter and a bodyguard for safety. Jack Lonbo, his bodyguard, adds a light-hearted touch by joking with Alain to keep his spirits high amidst the bustling crowds.

While Christmas is not traditionally celebrated in China—where Christians make up less than 3% of the population—the holiday has gained popularity in recent years. A local passerby remarks, “I didn’t expect to meet him here. We didn’t know Santa Claus when we were little. We discovered him recently,” highlighting the growing fascination with the festive figure.

Alain’s activities extend beyond photo ops and candy giveaways; he also initiates fun events like a Santa Claus-themed race. One competitor shares, “For us, Santa Claus is synonymous with luck,” showcasing the charm Alain brings to Chengdu. Interestingly, Alain has received lucrative offers to appear elsewhere, including a tempting proposal of 15,000 euros to work in Russia, which he graciously declined. “I would have to pack my bags and leave right away. Do you see me going to John and then telling him, ‘I’m leaving,’ for 5,000 more bucks? Well, no,” Alain asserts, promising to return to China next year to continue spreading happiness among children and families alike.
