A Chinese stratospheric balloon flying over the American sky has been shot down. Washington very quickly wanted to recover as much debris as possible in order to demonstrate that the balloon was indeed there to spy.

This is one of the most secret investigations of the moment: painstakingly recover the wreckage of the Chinese balloon from the bottom of the sea. The FBI is in charge of the case on behalf of Homeland Security. The debris is analyzed in the laboratory of Quanticothe headquarters of the FBI. For the US military, one thing is certain, this is not an isolated act by China. “We now know that China used a global balloon fleet to fly over five continents Latin and South America, South and East Asia and Europe”describes General Patrick Ryder, spokesman for the US Air Force.

A more efficient method of spying

China has also recognized the existence of a second balloon which flew over Costa Rica and Colombia in recent days. But why use balloons? For the experts, the balloon’s basket, stuffed with instruments and equipped with very large solar panels, would be much more efficient. “A balloon can descend in altitude, hover above a base for example or observe any other place much longer than a satellite”says David Sacks, China specialist.
