Monday, November 28, altercations broke out between protesters and police in the streets of Shanghai (China). Fences and barricades have been erected by the authorities to prevent gatherings. During the weekend, thousands of Chinese demonstrated to protest against the policy put in place by the government concerning the Covid-19. “We don’t want PCR tests anymore, we want freedom”chants a man.
This movement is gaining momentum, and demonstrators are holding sheets of white paper in their hands to demand more freedom of expression. Such a phenomenon is rare in China, and has not been seen in the country for over 30 years. Ten major Chinese cities are affected by these protests. “People are afraid of the system, people are afraid of being locked up”explains David Wilmots, a Belgian restaurateur based in China.
