China began Thursday, the day after the departure from Taipei of Ms. Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, maneuvers “live fire” in six large areas all around Taiwan.
These exercises, at least in this configuration, were to end on Sunday noon according to the Chinese maritime security administration. But maneuvers continue on Monday.
“The People’s Liberation Army (…) continues to conduct practical joint exercises in the sea and air space around Taiwan, focusing on joint anti-submarine and sea assault operations,” the Eastern Theater Command said in a statement.
The American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, had denounced the “total disproportion” according to him of the Chinese reaction and in particular of these maneuvers, during which Chinese missiles were fired.
After criticism from the G7 and the United States, he and his Japanese and Australian counterparts issued a joint statement calling on China to stop these military exercises.
