An ice sculpture festival is currently being held in China. It is an international competition held 12 days before the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

In the freezing night of northern China, the city of ice and light sparkles. Multicolored castles, colorful temples and giant slides… Over more than a square kilometer, there is a magical setting: it is the largest ice festival in the world. This year again, due to Covid-19, there are fewer visitors. To build this city, it took 230,000 cubic meters of ice, the equivalent of a hundred Olympic swimming pools.

Some more days early, by minus 30 degrees, the convicts of the ice are busy recovering blocks. From 3 am, 12 hours a day and for a month, men break the ice. Each block weighs almost a ton. On the construction site, an army is working hard to build ice monuments of all sizes. There are engineers, sculptors and electricians. Every detail must be perfect.
