He and Taylor Raddysh led the club with 20 goals in 2022-23.
Athanasiou added 20 assists, finishing third in team scoring.
Athanasiou had four game-defining goals, a career high.
The 28-year-old Ontarian has 125 goals and 236 points in the NHL.
He also played with Detroit (2015-20), Edmonton (2020) and Los Angeles (2020-22).
The Hawks went 26-49-7, finishing last in their division.
The rebuilding team has moved on from the Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews era, important elements of a champion club in 2010, 2013 and 2015.
Kane was traded to the New York Rangers, while Toews will not receive a new contract.
