The Chicago Bears have signed star running back D’Andre Swift to a three-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity to speak with The Associated Press because free agents cannot officially agree with new teams until Wednesday, when the NFL’s new fiscal year begins. This pact would be worth US$24 million, of which $15.3 million is guaranteed.
Swift, 25, was acquired from the Detroit Lions in last year’s NFL Draft and went on to have a career-best season. The American gained 1,049 yards and scored five touchdowns on the ground, in addition to being invited to his first Pro Bowl.
Swift spent his first three career seasons with the Lions, and he completed 593 carries for 2,729 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also caught 195 passes for 1,412 yards and eight additional majors.
Swift will therefore join Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson in the Bears backfield.
The latter completed the last campaign with a record of 7-10. They will have the first and ninth picks in the NFL draft which will take place next month.
