Chelsea and the hijab | The duty

As Brian Myles aptly puts it in his editorial, Chelsea teacher Fatemeh Anvari has made a gesture of political-religious activism. However, contrary to what he says, it is not the school board that should be blamed: it is rather the teacher. The teaching job application forms all include a checkbox by which the applicant certifies that he has read the information relating to law 21. As reported by the Aylmer Bulletin, the Western Quebec School Board hired Mr.me Anvari because she checked the box, and because the organization expects someone with a bachelor’s or master’s degree to be able to read a two-page document. It is the teacher who is responsible for her situation, for having made the decision not to comply with Law 21. This should only be seen as a gesture of self-victimization and intellectual dishonesty.
