(Saint-Anselme) The Sûreté du Québec is continuing its search on the banks of a river southeast of Quebec in the hope of finding the trace of a Ukrainian refugee who has been missing since Wednesday.
Sergeant Jean Raphaël Drolet, spokesperson for the SQ, indicates that police are searching the shore of the Etchemin River near St-Anselme, in the Chaudière-Appalaches region. A police helicopter is also taking part in the search.
Mr. Drolet says officers will continue to search on the ground, but not in the water. Divers believe the current is too strong – as it has been since Thursday – to conduct research there.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress said the missing man is 21 years old and has a mother, a twin brother and a younger brother in Canada.
A local community group, which helps immigrants settle in the area south of the provincial capital, said the man’s mother reported him missing to police on Wednesday. He had gone swimming in the river, but had not given any sign of life since, according to this one.
Authorities have been searching for the missing man since Thursday morning.
