Châtillon-sur-Indre and its surroundings very damaged by hail

The weekend was once again hectic in Indre, particularly in the Châtillon-sur-Indre sector. Violent storms and hail did not cause any casualties here, but the damage was considerable.

All the testimonies agree with regard to the intensity of the storms followed by hail and a waterspout. The municipality was impacted: homes, vehicles, were very damaged. But there was total solidarity between neighbors and Énédis did their best to restore power as quickly as possible. In contrast when it comes to crops, some farmers have lost almost everything. Samuel Delale, 32, is the head of 270 hectares of peas, rapeseed, wheat and sunflowers.

Samuel Delale took stock: 250 hectares out of 270 are unusable

The rain but also the hail destroyed the harvests of more than 90% of Samuel Delale’s crops as here with this plot of wheat totally destroyed
Sebastien Delale

And for his first sowing, of its 270 hectares more than 90% have been destroyed chopped down by rain and hail. So what to do in such a situation to support yourself and your family: ” I will speak with my bank so that we can find solutions on the postponement of certain deadlines. On a personal level, I have my parents who have offered to help me for the following year so that we can meet our needs. I have three children, a family, credits for our house like everyone else.” says Samuel Delale who has lost practically everything in terms of his crops.

“It was incredibly violent, hail and a wall of water for 10 minutes!” Gérard Nicaud, Mayor of Châtillon-sur-Indre

The Mayor of Châtillon-sur-Indre, Gérard Nicaud draws up an assessment of the crops that have almost all been affected : ” Already we have not deplored any victim, that is the main thing. Then solidarity played out between the neighbors to protect their homes. As far as farmers are concerned, the results are catastrophic. Everything that was cereal, wheat barley rapeseed, as the ears were heavy and the stalks very dry because the crops were very early, everything was put on the ground. Rapeseed we hardly see it anymore as if a roll had passed through the fields. The sunflowers are chopped, there is really nothing left. It was incredibly violent, hail and a wall of water for 10 minutes! I would also like to thank the presence of Énédis from Saturday evening with the citizens who were deprived of electricity..”

Procedures with insurance companies will begin in the next few days for farmers and all those who have been affected by these climatic phenomena. They all want to get back on track as quickly as possible, even if for some it will take a long time.
