After holding its breath throughout the day, the United Kingdom finally finds itself plunged into mourning following the death of its sovereign. While we thought she was immortal, Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at the age of 96.
As a reminder, a few hours before the announcement of the death of the queen, Buckingham Palace announced that the health of Elizabeth II had deteriorated… “Following a further assessment this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended that she remains under medical supervision. The Queen continues to feel comfortable and stays at Balmoral”announced the Palace via a brief press release… But who will succeed him now?
Prince Charles becomes King Charles III
First successor, Prince Charles becomes king of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, while his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles becomes queen consort. Thus, Prince Charles automatically becomes King Charles III since it is under this name that he will reign according to the declaration of the British Prime Minister.
The day after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the new King will be proclaimed at 10 a.m. by the Accession Council (the Accession Council, a ceremonial body comprising senior government officials) which will meet at Saint James’s Palace in London, attended by hundreds of Privy Councillors, including the Prime Minister and senior ministers. “The proclamation will then be read at St. James’s Palace and the Royal Exchange in the City of London, confirming Charles as King,” Politico said.
