He knows how to choose his moments. Already a winner at home in Monaco this year, Charles Leclerc offered himself a new symbolic success at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Sunday September 1st. Enough to delight the transalpine tifosi, who had been waiting for a Ferrari victory on home soil since 2019… already with Charles Leclerc.
The 26-year-old found himself leading the pitstop game, while Oscar Piastri seemed the fastest in his McLaren after passing his teammate Lando Norris, who started from pole position, on the first lap. When the Australian passed Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) to close on Leclerc with much less worn tires, the Scuderia headliner gave his all to not lose his 11-second lead with eight laps to go. A risky bet, but ultimately a winning one at the checkered flag.
With the second and third places of Piastri and Norris, the McLarens still achieved a good operation in the constructors’ standings, coming back level with the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen (6th) and Sergio Pérez (8th). In the drivers’ standings, Norris is back to 70 points behind Verstappen. The Frenchmen of Alpine, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, finished outside the points.
