Charles Hamelin concludes World Cup career with one final medal

Veteran Charles Hamelin ended his short track speed skating World Cup career by contributing to Canada’s silver medal in the men’s 5,000-meter relay on Sunday in Dordrecht, the Netherlands.

Hamelin, Pascal Dion Steven Dubois and Maxime Laoun set a time of 6 minutes 46.963 seconds in the last event on the weekend program. They finished 23 thousandths of a second behind South Korea.

In addition, Dion got his hands on a first career World Cup title, finishing atop the overall 1,000-meter standings.

In the fourth and final stop of the season, Dion completed the 1,000-meter event in fourth place, clocking 1: 24.026. Hungarian Shaoang Liu took gold in 1: 23.791.

Overall, Dion amassed a grand total of 20,800 points thanks to third places in Beijing on October 24 and Nagoya on October 31 and a second place last weekend in Hungary.

He edged South Korean Daeheon Hwang, who finished the season with 20,115 points.

On the women’s side, Sherbrooke’s Kim Boutin completed her weekend with three medals.

After winning gold in the 500m on Saturday, Boutin added a silver in the 1,000m, clocking 1: 28.510. South Korean Minjeong Choi beat her with a time of 1: 28.417.

Canada’s Courtney Sarault (1: 29.235) placed fourth.

Boutin, Sarault, Florence Brunelle and Alyson Charles later joined forces to collect a silver medal in the women’s 3,000-meter relay.

The four Canadians stopped the clock in 4: 06.102, behind the Netherlands (4: 05.813).
