Chargers muzzle Jets offense to win 27-6

(East Rutherford) Derius Davis returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown, Austin Ekeler ran for two more touchdowns and the Los Angeles Chargers defeated the New York Jets 27-6 on Monday.

Justin Herbert didn’t have to do too much, completing 16 of 30 passes for 136 yards. Despite everything, he became the fastest quarterback to reach the milestone of 1,500 career completions. He achieved it with his 11e relay of the game – a four-yard play to Keenan Allen in the third quarter.

The pivot competed for a 57e game in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes and Matthew Stafford held the previous mark, totaling 1,500 passes at their 62e encounter.

Allen caught seven balls for 77 yards, reaching 10,000 passing yards. The Chargers (4-4), who forced four fumbles from the Jets (4-4), recovered three. They had eight sacks against Zach Wilson, including 2.5 from Joey Bosa and two each from Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu.

Wilson and the Jets were unable to find their rhythm even though they were facing the worst defense against the air game. Wilson connected with his receivers 33 times on 49 attempts for 263 yards.

Davis’ punt return was the NFL’s longest punt return of the season and the Chargers’ first touchdown return since Desmond King’s 68-yarder against the Denver Broncos in 2019.

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was on the field during warmups, eight weeks to the day after tearing his left Achilles tendon in the season opener.

Rodgers, 39, previously said his goal was to return before the end of this season. He dropped back and completed a few passes that went about 50 yards.
