“chaos”, state of emergency … The government stalls and the right accuses it of laxity

Third consecutive night of violence in the Paris region and throughout France. The anger does not fall after the death of young Nahel, the government does not manage to restore calm…

Despite the record numbers of police and gendarmes deployed by Gérard Darmanin – 40,000 in France, including 5,000 in the Paris region – the government is unable to restore calm. Despite, also, the very firm condemnation by the executive of all these acts “unjustifiable“, in the words of Emmanuel Macron.

Despite, finally, dozens of arrests among the rioters, or even despite the provisional detention of the policeman who killed the young man and who is indicted for “intentional homicide”. Nothing works.

The right engulfs

The spiral of violence continues to engulf neighborhoods. And here is the government which comes up against a dangerous political escalation. The right thus accuses it of laxity… In fact, as on the subject of immigration, a few weeks ago, the right engaged in a perilous race of speed with the extreme right. The Republicans and the National Rally compete in martial words. Eric Ciotti is already calling for the establishment of a state of emergency, like Eric Zemmour for that matter.

An exceptional measure, taken by Dominique de Villepin and Nicolas Sarkozy during the riots of 2005, but which is not on the agenda, for the time being, according to Elisabeth Borne. The boss of LR is indignant at scenes of disorder (…) fraught with peril for our Nation“. And even Laurent Wauquiez came out of his discretion to assert that”we can’t let chaos settle in the country“.

Tribute to Pasqua

The right therefore takes the side of the police, totally and above all without any reservations. In fact, LR jumped at the chance of comments by Emmanuel Macron and Élisabeth Borne who pointed to the behavior of the police officer who killed the young Nahel. To try to recover the bet, the right stirs up the corporatism of the police. No question of restricting the use of their weapons; on the contrary, for LR, the police must be able to defend themselves better.

And a sign of the times, Eric Ciotti even saw fit to pay tribute Thursday, June 29, to Charles Pasqua, who died 8 years ago. “In these moments of insurrection, we miss his authority, he knew how to make himself respected!“, asserted the boss of LR. Charles Pasqua who, let us remember, was Minister of the Interior during one of the most terrible police blunders of the Fifth Republic: the death of Malik Oussekine beaten by police in 1986 .
