Change of name or pronoun at school | Alberta will require parental consent

(Edmonton) Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the province will require parental consent for students aged 15 and under who want to change their name or pronoun at school.

She says 16 and 17-year-old students will not need consent, but their parents must be informed.

Danielle Smith announced the changes in a video posted on the X platform and says they are the result of discussions with her United Conservative Party caucus.

She also announced limits on gender-affirming surgeries and hormone treatments for adolescents.

Additionally, parents should opt for classroom teaching about gender, sexual orientation, and sexuality.

Policy changes were also announced for transgender athletes.

Mme Smith is scheduled to hold a news conference Thursday in Calgary about “new policies to support children and youth as they mature.”
