The avalanche risk is highest in the mountains, from Friday December 10. In Chamrousse, many snow enthusiasts are expected during the weekend, and the resort is getting ready.
In Chamrousse, (Isère), winter is well established, Friday December 10. The ski area has been partially open for a week. And the snow, which had fallen in quantity, surprised everyone. “We had big falls sometimes, 70, 80 cm, but there, 1.7 meters at the beginning of December …”, is surprised Jean-Luc Jaouen, responsible for the ski area of Chamrousse, who claims to have seen nothing like this “for 20 years”.
The wind weakens the snowpack. The avalanche risk in the area is 4 out of 5, and 5 out of 5 in other massifs. Off-piste is therefore strongly discouraged. Even with the return of good weather, caution will remain in order for at least the whole weekend. The massif has already experienced, Thursday, December 9, a spontaneous flow. “It only takes a single skier or several skiers to pass, and that can trigger a fairly substantial avalanche”, warns Laurent Cruau, nivologist. 70% of the domain will be open for the weekend.
