The drought is getting worse in Burgundy and the Saône area is now in a crisis situation. The prefect of Saône-et-Loire therefore issued, this Friday, August 5, an order on new restrictions on the use of water considering the current hydrological situation, and in particular the low flow rates of certain rivers. This placement of the Saône in a crisis situation therefore has a direct and strong impact on the town of Chalon-sur-Saône.
Direct consequences on the green heritage of the city
These measures have a direct impact on the green heritage of the city of Chalon by prohibiting any watering of lawns, flower beds and potted plants, other green spaces. These restrictions are also valid for individuals. These measures apply until September 15, 2022.
Following this new drought order, the implementation of these restrictions has led the Green Spaces department to no longer water the entire green heritage of the City since Monday, but also to proceed with the removal of bins and pots for gather in the Green Spaces service where they can be kept as much as possible at a cooler temperature than in town, with weighted watering thanks to a pocket of rainwater, collected previously as authorized, and containing 70,000 liters.
What heritage is concerned?
These measures will lead to the removal of bins from Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, the Denon Museum, Place de Thiard, Rue de Strasbourg and pots from pedestrian streets.
For all other flower beds and planters (Médicis, avenue de Paris, kiosk, etc.): complete stoppage of watering and removal of flowers as they dry out.
Exceptions ?
A exception will be made for massif of the Tower of the Doyenné which will be watered with recovered rainwater brought by truck, in order to maintain this massif. However, the lawn will no longer be watered.
The golf courses which are the subject of a daily statement of consumption can still be watered at the entrance and exit of the course with a 70% reduction in consumption while the fairways will not.
All the new plantations (trees and shrubs) were watered during the course of last week.
It is to be feared that within ten days, with no forecast rain, the beds will gradually dry out. The agents of the green spaces will only be able to proceed with the uprooting of the plantations.
