CH forward Joel Armia is the Montreal Canadiens’ candidate for the Bill Masterton Trophy

Joel Armia has always been hard on himself and that’s probably what helped him become a good enough prospect to be selected in the first round. This is also perhaps the reason why he then only demonstrated in short sequences the extent of his talent in the NHL.

Everything changed this season, however, thanks to an electroshock stay in the American Hockey League and the resources that allowed him to change his mentality.

It is for this reason in particular that Armia was elected candidate of the Montreal Canadiens for the Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded annually to an NHL player who best embodies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to his sport.

Armia was elected by members of the Montreal chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Each team presents a candidate for this trophy.

“He is an extraordinary example of a person who overcame obstacles,” said Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis late Thursday evening. He is a good example for our young players, but also for other veterans. »

Armia has had a rollercoaster campaign. He was initially passed over on waivers after a difficult camp and was dealt to the Laval Rocket, returning to the American Hockey League for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

The 30-year-old Finn, who was selected in the 16e rank in the 2011 NHL draft, by the Buffalo Sabres, however, did not give up.

“It was the only thing to do, to be positive,” Armia said, after the Habs’ 7-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, without knowing the news of his appointment. I could only work on myself.

“Yes, it felt good to produce a lot (with the Rocket), but I also focused on all aspects affecting the team,” he added. I wanted to join the team. »

After two productive stays with the Rocket, Armia reminded everyone of his many qualities on the ice upon his return to the Canadiens and has finally started to show consistency.

St-Louis noted a more smiling Armia in January. General manager Kent Hughes also praised the work of mental performance coach Jean-François Ménard with Armia.

“I can’t give credit to just one person,” Armia said. We have several resources here and a good group in the locker room.

“I worry less after a mistake,” he explained of his change in mentality. I must not play holding back. I have a better approach now. »

Thanks to two goals Thursday night against the Lightning, Armia tied a career high with 16 goals in 59 games this season.

“What I found this season and what I think is good about hockey is that you can always learn new things,” Armia said.

Armia received five of the 13 first-place votes and collected 19 points in the poll. He beat out Mike Matheson and David Savard, who each had two first-place votes and 14 points.

Alex Belzile was elected candidate for the Habs last season. Six Canadian players have already won the Masterton Trophy since it was first awarded in 1968, including goalkeeper Carey Price at the end of the 2021-22 season.
