CFL | Lions sign Quebecer Mathieu Betts to a contract

(Vancouver) Star defensive lineman Mathieu Betts is back with the BC Lions as that team hits a rough patch.

The Lions announced Thursday that they have signed the 29-year-old Montrealer to a contract for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Betts, the Canadian Football League’s defensive MVP last year, was cut by the NFL’s Detroit Lions on Tuesday. He had two individual tackles and a sack in three preseason games.

Betts signed a one-year deal with the NFL team last February, shortly after his contract with B.C. expired.

Last season, Betts led the CFL in sacks with 18, the most ever by a Canadian player.

He also had a career-high 44 tackles (three for losses), forced four fumbles and blocked a punt.

Betts, a six-foot-three, 250-pound athlete, joins a club that has lost its last five games and is now five wins and six losses.

The Lions will try to get back to winning ways on Saturday in Victoria when they host the Ottawa Redblacks (7-2-1).
