CF Montreal | They will be five

It’s official: Joel Waterman gets his first recall from the Canadian national team for the next World Cup. He thus joins the large CF Montreal delegation, which already includes Ismaël Koné, Kamal Miller, Alistair Johnston and Samuel Piette.

These five players have been selected by Canada for two international matches in September, in preparation for the FIFA World Cup, which will take place in Qatar in November. The Canadians will face Qatar on September 23, in Austria, then Uruguay on September 27, in Slovakia.

This is the third time since 2012 that the WFC has had five or more players invited to a single Canadian Senior Team camp.

Waterman joins the Canadian squad for the first time since March 2021, when he was invited to two World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and the Cayman Islands in Florida.

Johnston, Miller and Piette were all recalled by Canada during the June international window, as the team faced Curacao and Honduras in Concacaf Nations League Group C. Johnston and Miller played all 90 minutes of both games. Piette, meanwhile, made an appearance as a substitute against Curacao.

Koné will be on his second camp with the national team. In March, he was selected for the first time for the final round of qualifying for the World Cup. The midfielder had his first minutes with the senior team on March 24, as a substitute against Costa Rica at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose.

Canada will be in Group F of the World Cup group stage, alongside Belgium, Croatia and Morocco. He will participate in the tournament for the first time in 36 years.
