CF Montreal | Romell Quioto, like a beacon in the night

It is as regular as the entertainment provided by Jackie Chan films. As sharp in front of the net as a cat seeing a red laser.

Romell Quioto continues to shine in attack for CF Montreal. Last Saturday in Washington, he scored his eighth and ninth MLS goals of the season, a career high.

After Tuesday’s training, the Honduran international said he was “very happy to have reached this mark”. He talked about “focus” and “continuous work”.

“I stay focused on the task at hand,” he commented through an interpreter. I remain patient too, when things are not going so well. That’s what keeps me going. »

Djordje Mihailovic returns from injury. Mason Toye is still looking for his bearings. Kei Kamara hasn’t scored since mid-May. Meanwhile, Quioto is establishing himself as Montreal’s top scorer since Ignacio Piatti.

That now makes him 29 in 68 games, in all competitions, since his arrival in Montreal in 2020. Piatti, with his title of top scorer in club history, has scored 78 in 162 games.

“It’s not easy to maintain this regularity, he agrees. But it is with work that I manage to do it. In addition to the fact that I can chain matches. I haven’t always had this opportunity in the past. »

Quioto had 8 goals and 6 assists in 19 games in each of his first two seasons in Montreal. 2020 was the year of the pandemic. In 2021, an injury in the second half of the calendar had slowed his momentum.

Here we are in 2022, and the ferocious attacker has just reached the mark of 19 games played last Saturday. All is well in terms of his health. And his teammates appreciate what he brings to the team.

“We know that Romell can do great things, commented Mathieu Choinière on Tuesday. He’s an incredible player. »

It is the fruit of the work he does. He helps us a lot. […] We are really happy to have him in our team.

The Quebec midfielder notes a renewed “confidence” that rubs off on the whole team when Quioto steps on the lawn.

“We know that when he arrives in front of goal, it will be decisive. He is a player who has a lot of self-confidence. It helps us. »

Always more

His performance last Saturday earned him a place on the MLS Team of the Week. In addition to his two successes, he missed the opportunity to put on another: his lob, shot from afar, went just over the net.

“It’s good, but he could have scored more goals! “, had said, laughing Wilfried Nancy on this subject, after the meeting.

The head coach always mentioned wanting Romell Quioto to “raise his standards”.

I always challenge him a little higher. I expect him to give even more. He knows it. We talked about it quickly.

Quioto says he lives “very well” with it.

“I like that the coach has his demands on me. In addition, there are still several games to play. I will certainly have the opportunity to register others. »

“A deep attachment” to Montreal

Romell Quioto lives a beautiful love story with Montreal. He also has “MTL” tattooed on the back of his left leg (see the third photo of this Instagram post).

But he is in his last year of a three-year contract with the Bleu-et-noir. In interview with The Press last February, he said he “loves the city”, is “comfortable” and “happy” there.

His opinion has not changed today.

“I have a deep attachment to the club and the city. It is certain that I would like to continue the adventure. I work in this direction. »

“I’m concentrating on the game. But eventually, it’s certain that there will be discussions with the club. Hoping that it can lead to an extension. »
