CF Montreal loses 2-1 against Sporting

CF Montreal allowed the worst team in MLS to come from behind to win 2-1 on Saturday night on the lawn of the Saputo stadium.

The Montreal team, which despite everything was the most threatening during the match, had taken the lead from the 13e minute of play. But she was unable to capitalize on her many chances afterwards.

Two small technical errors set the stage for Sporting’s goals (5-11-4), which occupied the last place in the Western Association. Roger Espinoza and Rémi Walter hit the mark for the visitors.

Romell Quioto opened the scoring for CF Montreal (9-8-2) with his seventh goal of the campaign. Wilfried Nancy’s men missed a great opportunity to distance themselves from FC Cincinnati and Charlotte FC, who are chasing them for the fourth tier of the Eastern Conference.

The Bleu-blanc-noir largely dominated possession of the ball, with almost 65 percent, and he fired 16 shots on goal, including five on target, compared to six for his opponents.

Before the match, CF Montreal announced that Victor Wanyama would be absent due to an illness unrelated to COVID-19, but that Logan Ketterer was on MLS’s COVID-19 protocol.

The Montrealers will resume action next Saturday at Stade Saputo, where they will host Toronto FC.

CF Montreal quickly set the tone by buzzing into enemy territory and the efforts paid off in the 13e minute.

On the right flank, Lassi Lappalainen first took defender Ben Sweat out of his shoes before performing a superb cross at the far post that Quioto skillfully redirected with a header into the back of the net.

The door opened at Sporting at the 29e minute. Quioto had poor ball control and Espinoza grabbed it. Chased by two Montreal players, he fired a left-footed shot that lodged in the back of the net.

After several missed opportunities, notably on a corner kick, CF Montreal was surprised in the 63e minute of play. Defender Kamal Miller accidentally pushed back a throw-in from an opposing player and Kayden Pierre grabbed the ball. He back pass to Walter, who unleashed a powerful shot that gave Sebastian Breza no chance.

CF Montreal had several other chances in the penalty area before the end of the game, including that of Mathieu Choinière, saved by Tim Melia, but they were not able to create equality.
