Atlanta United snatched a 2-2 draw at NYCFC on Sunday, and the New York club had to settle for one point.

New York City FC (8-4-5) increased their total to 29 points after 17 games, as did CFM (9-6-2), but the Montrealers are in first place thanks to their additional victory.

Despite a brace from Valentín Castellanos – who reached the 10-goal mark for the third time in the last four seasons – the hosts fell victim to a net from Josef Martínez and a late strike from veteran Dom Dwyer.

In addition to NYCFC, CF Montreal is virtually tied on points with the Philadelphia Union and the New York Red Bulls.

Wilfried Nancy’s men will return to action on Monday against the Los Angeles Galaxy as part of the USA Independence Day festivities.

After the duel against the Galaxy, the Montreal XI will have to play nine games at home (5-3-0) and seven on the road (4-3-2).
