CF Montreal improved their team record by going unbeaten for their eighth straight game with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Charlotte FC on Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium.
Djordje Mihailovic, with his sixth of the season, just before stoppage time in the first half, and Alistair Johnston, in the second half, scored the goals for CF Montreal (6-3-2).
Goalkeeper Sebastian Breza blocked all four shots on goal for Charlotte FC (4-7-1) and picked up his first shutout of the season.
However, CF Montreal completed the game in the absence of Romell Quioto, who injured his right shoulder on the sequence leading to Mihailovic’s goal.
After several minutes on the ground, Quioto eventually got up, but he immediately left the field. After Johnston’s goal, he was seen on the sidelines, a big smile on his face, but also with his right arm in a sling.
CF Montreal will play its next game Wednesday night in Nashville.
Slow start to the game
With a team that had not lost for two months and another undefeated in front of its supporters since the beginning of March, we were treated to a start to the game based on caution on both sides.
The game started to liven up after the half hour and both teams had great chances to score the first goal of the game.
CF Montreal capitalized on the best of them all in the 45and minute of play.
Left completely alone in the center of the area, Mihailovic deflected with the right foot, behind Kristijan Kahlina, a nice back pass from Quioto while the latter fell heavily to the ground after contact with defender Guzman Corujo.
Kei Kamara, Quioto’s substitute, got an assist on Johnston’s goal, scored in the 67thand minute, shortly after Charlotte FC threatened the Montreal fortress.
Sign of a maturity that seems acquired, the Montreal team seemed in control of the situation during the 25 minutes that followed and they were able to protect their lead and this victory.
