The future of the Quebecer in the metropolis is assured until 2024 and the agreement also comes with an option for 2025.
Choinière, who joined the team’s Academy in 2011, rose through the ranks one by one. He is also the first player to have been part of the U13, U14, U16, U18 and U19 teams before joining the first team in MLS on July 17, 2018.
“We are happy that Mathieu is continuing with us,” CF Montreal sporting director Olivier Renard said in a statement. This contract extension reflects the club’s philosophy, which is to trust young players and if they are Quebecers like Mathieu, it’s even better.
It was last season that Choinière really made his mark with the first team, playing 26 games, including 24 as a starter, scoring two goals. In five seasons in MLS, he now has 48 games, including 30 starts, and 2,755 minutes of play.
The 23-year-old athlete stood out above all for his versatility, being able to play in midfield, in defense and on the wing.
“He had a hard time with an injury that kept him off the field for several months, but he came back strong to a new position by proving his qualities, also recognized Renard. We hope he will continue to improve.”
On the international scene, Choinière participated in his first camp with the senior Canadian national team in September 2018. Last June, his name was included on the provisional list for the Gold Cup 2021. He made his debut with the program Canadian in 2013 at the age of 14.
