CF Montreal confirms the sale of Djordje Mihailovic to AZ Alkmaar

CF Montreal confirmed on Wednesday that Djordje Mihailovic has moved to Dutch first division club AZ Alkmaar and added that the midfielder will finish the current season with the MLS club.

Mihailovic will join his new formation only on the 1er January.

The information was reported by various media last week.

“It had been his dream for several years to go to Europe and I am happy that we can contribute to his career objective, said the vice-president and chief sports officer of CF Montreal, Olivier Renard, in a communicated. It’s a good agreement with a club where he wanted to go and where he can fully realize himself with his style of play and his qualities.”

The 23-year-old Mihailovic played 54 regular season games, including 50 as a starter, in two seasons with CF Montreal. In 2022, he has scored a career-high seven goals so far, along with four assists.

In 2021, he had 16 assists, setting a new club record, previously held by Nacho Piatti — 13 in 2018.

“It’s a very exciting moment for me, but also sad, knowing that I will be leaving CF Montreal,” said Mihailovic. Europe has always been my dream and they [la direction du CF Montréal] gave me the chance to pursue this new path in my career. But it’s not finished ! This season we have the opportunity to achieve something special for the club and the city. »

CF Montreal had acquired Mihailovic from the Chicago Fire for a general allocation amount of $400,000 in 2021 and $400,000 in 2022. The deal also included a clause that the Fire get a percentage of a possible transfer.

Mihailovic also played six games with the US national team, including two 2019 Gold Cup games. He scored a goal on January 28, 2019 in a friendly match against Panama. More recently, he was recalled by the American team for four games in the June international window.
