César 2022 – Moving tribute to Gaspard Ulliel: Léa Seydoux and Xavier Dolan in tears

The 47th Cesar ceremony may have offered beautiful moments of joy, but above all a great moment of emotion. On the Olympia stage, Xavier Dolan paid a long and vibrant tribute to the man who was not just one of his actors in Just the end of the world, but above all a close friend: Gaspard Ulliel. Somehow, very moved, the young Canadian actor and director read a letter addressed to the mother of the actor, who died following a skiing accident on January 19, at only 36 years old.

I couldn’t help but think he would have hated that kind of praise. He would have perceived I think in this glorification, a lack of elegance. And he was very elegant. Because his career is displayed by itself, through the sites that sing it, the articles that praise him and all the roles that survive him. His talent, we still have it and no one can take that away from usnotably read the 32-year-old Canadian, overwhelmed by tears. It is the privilege of being famous (…). It’s a whole world that mourned Gaspard, it’s a whole world that still mourns him.”

In the room, the emotion was palpable, even through the screen. Léa Seydoux wiped away a few tears, she who had already attended the funeral of Gaspard Ulliel with great emotion, last January. Other personalities let their pain be seen in this poignant tribute: Pierre Niney, Cécile de France, Leïla Bekhti… On the other hand, the Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps, the last companion of Gaspard Ulliel, also present in the room, remained in the shadow of the cameras.
