Czechia and Poland have reintroduced border controls to deal with the migration crisis. Slovakia is also following suit. What are the reasons for these measures?

The police are present on the Austrian-Slovak border. Controls are carried out there to repel migrants and reduce illegal immigration. “Several dozen people have tried to cross in recent days and that is why it is important to control our borders”analyzes Johann Baumschlaguer, spokesperson for the Austrian police.

Other Central European countries have made a similar decision

Like Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland have also opted for this measure. “We spotted a group of 19 migrants, made up of 16 men and 3 children. They were in a van with a Polish plate. The driver and the smuggler fled into the forest and are wanted”, explains Tomas Kuzel, Czech police officer. 39,000 migrants attempted to cross the Slovak borders illegally between January and October 2023. Slovakia introduced controls at its border until October 14.
